I have spent 10 years in the University sector as a senior lecturer and during that time ran a consultancy business within the University. This led to international consulting, presenting seminars and lectures at conferences around the world and a good income.
Providing you can give good quality advice, with integrity and add value to the clients business, in general you will end up running a successful consulting business.
When I first started all I had was a desk, computer and phone and was working from a spare room in a small house.
Now I live in a 16th century manor house, with a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, library, private lake, tennis court and am surrounded by acres of beautiful countryside. I have not inherited these things, I have achieved them from successfully running my own business. I am now director of an international consulting firm with a long
list of clients and successful projects including several patents under my belt.
I work with who I like, or what projects interest me and I have no commuting to work and live a good lifestyle, choosing when I want to work (within reason - we all have to agree on commitments when working with others - the point is as long as I deliver those commitments then I can choose when I want to work).
If you have often dreamt of running your own science based company or would like to become a consultant but are not sure
how, then sign up for one of my courses. You can either join a weekend or weekday course, or I can do a half day course tailored to your needs on how to become a scientific consultant.
Topics include how to set up a limited company or as a sole trader, how to get clients, what to charge, how to keep clients;
how to do international consulting; how to select the right insurance if you make mistakes; how to market your services, negotiation skills and a host of other topics.
Half day courses start from £750 (one on one session with me accept if you are planning to set up in the same
field as mine, in which case the are extra costs involved!).
If you prefer you can book into one of my day / weekend courses with other delegates:
Costs for one day courses are £350 pounds.
For a full weekend course including accommodation, food and lectures / workshops, the cost of this is £650 per
person (tax deductible when you set up your own business).
These sessions include group work such as negotiating a contract with a client, how to market your particular scientific expertise and various role playing exercises.
I started consulting work because I thought I would enjoy it. I have worked on hundreds of different projects and my client list includes most of the major multinational pharmaceutical companies in the UK, plus many other large and smaller companies World wide. I have been on TV in the UK (including the BBC national news) and overseas, conducted hundreds of interviews to the media including radio and newspapers and magazines.

If you are a successful consultant, why do you want to teach others how to do this?
I enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge that I have gained over the past 20 years or so.
Why are the fees expensive?
Expensive is always a relative term. A workshop of mine will tell you how to set up as a consultant so that you earn a good income, and have freedom that you probably didn’t know existed. The fees are very small to the potential income you can earn as a consultant and in most cases, providing you set up the business within three years they can be claimed back from your tax bill!
Are you not worried that you will teach others how to compete with you and take away some of your business?
I have been doing this a long time now and have built up an excellent reputation. The world is a big place and with the use of the internet, there are numerous opportunities for all of us. However, if someone wants to copy exactly what I do, then I am prepared to share my expertise to a certain degree but the costs will be more expensive.
I don’t want to be an international consultant or be in the media. Can you still help me?
Yes absolutely. The principles and techniques I have used can be applied to most scientific consultancy business whether you are an engineer, a biologist or even if you want to run a consultancy business outside of science.
How do I know your courses are suitable for me?
I will have an initial 15 minute consultation with you over the phone to understand what you would like to do and
then explain how the course/ seminar or workshop can help you. If I don’t think you need my help –then I will tell you!
